At Merchant Creek Mining Company we are taking this situation very seriously and we are committed to closely monitoring recommendations, suggestions, and guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), Federal and State Governments, and other public health agencies as we chart our course for the 2020 Gold Mining Season.
The global spread of COVID-19 is affecting every one of us. We find our daily lives changed in ways that challenge us all to think or act differently. Merchant Creek Mining Company is a people first company and small family operation, and we do what we do with the belief that social and economic responsibility can change lives, and maintain the hope that for generations to come we find ways to both succeed and cope with the challenges and unexpected as it arrives.
Around the globe, as nations and as a people we are all adapting and responding in our own way, it’s important that we all step back and realize the impact hiat COVID-19 has, and will continue to have on businesses and daily lives on a global scale. This has to be a global effort, though there are things we can all do such as assisting vulnerable groups such as elderly, etc., to support research and study this virus, and to care for the sick. This requires all of our care, and all of our participation. And both I and Merchant Creek Mining Company want to do our part.
First I want to thank our many friends, partners, customers and supporters. Merchant Creek Mining Company would not be what it is without you! I’ve been forced to give this much thought both for MCM and our mining co-op, and as we have discussed this there have been two solid endings. First as partners we will each address and respond to the COVID-19 crisis independently as our own companies are best suited to different situations and locales. Secondly as a group we will make determinations for the best interest of all in our operations.
Merchant Creek Mining Company is indefinitely suspending all public gold sales. This decision didn’t come lightly. But as we discussed this and thought about a course of action, right or wrong, this decision is based on one fact. There is an almost nil possibility of this, but the fact is that we are working in and transporting and shipping gold and/or materials that contain billion year old bacteria, unknowns, etc. And even though there is very minimal to zero chance that it would cause a problem, it just simply put isn’t worth the chance to have age old bacteria mixed with this strain of virus. Common colds and flu have been known to mutate in natural elements. And while there is little chance this will happen with COVID-19, the virus is new and virtually unknown. So, I see this as part of the company’s social responsibility. Additionally as you know we have gold shipped from different countries and while there is no current evidence that the virus is transmitted through packaging, gold is often moist or collects some amount of moisture which opens the door to more unknown possibilities.
MCM And Our Partners:
We know our situation is a bit unique and our Partners are each following suit as they see fit. Still as we all come together as industry partners to recover gold as a co-op there are current challenges that we as a team must look at. As we have discussed the upcoming season we came face to face with our labor needs. Since we are fairly remote in location as a group we made the preemptive decision to postpone beginning operations for a minimum of 30 days. It became obvious that having a team in a remote area with anyone who may later become ill has the potential to expose the entire group. In our minds there is no amount of gold that is worth that risk. We will evaluate this situation on an ongoing basis.
There is absolutely no mistaking the challenges we currently all face. It isn’t currently known how long this may hamper lifestyle and cause turmoil in daily life or global economics. However we are looking forward to a successful season in 2020 and will continue to work to insure that we do our part to emerge for the better. We do not yet know with certainty when the greatest risk will be behind us. But if we each can do our own part, large or small we will get there!
We also applaud all the Medical Professionals, Scientists, Analysists, Researchers, Health Organizations, Colleges & Universities, and all others who are working diligently, many around the clock to both shed light on and aide the effort to eliminate the current threat.
As a Mining Group we have made the commitment to donate a portion of this years revenue to aide the cause. While it is early in the game the determination of the exact amounts and beneficiaries will be determined at a later date.
Together we go forward. Together we can do this!
